Art & Craft Livelihood Promotion Initiative

Overview

For over a decade, SEWA has been actively promoting traditional art and craft-based livelihoods in collaboration with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development in Balangir District. The initiative focuses on empowering rural and tribal communities-especially women-through skill development, capacity building, market linkage, and sustainable income generation.

Terracotta Craft Development Bangamunda Block

In the Bangamunda Block, SEWA has successfully revived and strengthened terracotta craftsmanship across three villages.

  • Beneficiaries: 45 households
  • Intervention: Skill training, design development, and production support
  • Outcome:
  • Artisans are now self-reliant and producing high-quality terracotta products
  • Established market linkages enabling regular sales and profit generation
  • Strengthened household income and sustainable livelihoods

This initiative has not only preserved traditional craft but also transformed it into a viable economic activity.

Applique Work – Titilagarh Block

In Titilagarh Block, SEWA has promoted applique work in two villages, including Chandurla.

  • Beneficiaries: 30 women artisans
  • Intervention: Skill training, product diversification, and exposure visits
  • Outcome:
  • Women artisans are now registered as certified artisans
  • Participation in various exhibitions and fairs at regional and state levels
  • Enhanced income and improved socio-economic status

The initiative has enabled women to gain recognition and establish a strong identity as skilled artisans.

Pattachitra Art – Titilagarh Municipality Area

SEWA has introduced and developed Pattachitra art among women in the Titilagarh municipality area.

  • Beneficiaries: 20 women
  • Intervention: Traditional art training, certification support, and market linkage
  • Outcome:
  • Artisans have received official artisan certificates
  • Active participation in exhibitions and online sales platforms
  • Allocation of a dedicated shop by the municipality to display and sell products

This effort has provided artisans with both physical and digital market access, ensuring steady income opportunities.

Soura Art (Tribal Art) Promotion

SEWA is also promoting Soura art, a traditional tribal art form, among rural women.

  • Beneficiaries: 20 women
  • Intervention: Training in traditional painting techniques and design innovation
  • Outcome:
  • Revival and preservation of indigenous tribal art
  • Creation of unique, marketable art products
  • Additional income source for participating women

 

SEWA’s Art & Craft initiative stands as a model for sustainable livelihood promotion, combining traditional knowledge with modern market opportunities. With continued support from NABARD, the program continues to empower rural communities, preserve cultural heritage, and create long-term economic resilience.
